Privacy policy

Who we are

Shotcut is operated by Pro Stack Labs (“we”, “us”). This policy explains how we handle personal information when you use shotcut.ai or connect Shotcut to an AI assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude. We are the controller (data fiduciary) of the personal information described here.

Information we collect

• Account information: your email address, name and profile image if you provide them, and sign-in details. If you sign in with a third-party account such as Google, we receive basic profile information from that provider.
• Your content: projects you create, including titles, text, timing and styling, media you upload or ask us to import from a link, preview frames, rendered videos and version history.
• Information from connected AI assistants: the specific requests the assistant sends to Shotcut when you use it, such as “create a quote card”, and the results we return. We do not receive your full conversation history.
• Technical information: IP address, browser and device type, and request and error logs, used to run and secure the service.
• Usage analytics, only if you allow them: which features are used, linked to a pseudonymous ID rather than your name or email address.
• Communications: messages you send to support.

We do not ask for payment card details, government identifiers, health information or passwords for other services. Please don’t include sensitive personal information in your projects.

How we use information

• To provide Shotcut: create, preview, edit, render and store your projects, and keep them linked to your account. (Necessary to perform our contract with you.)
• To keep Shotcut secure and reliable: authenticate users, prevent abuse, enforce fair-use limits and fix errors. (Our legitimate interests.)
• To improve Shotcut using optional analytics. (Your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.)
• To respond to you and send essential service messages, such as sign-in codes. (Contract and legitimate interests.)
• To comply with law and enforce our Terms. (Legal obligation and legitimate interests.)

We do not sell your personal information, share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, show ads or use your content to train AI models.

How we share information

• Service providers that run Shotcut for us: cloud hosting and computing, databases and secure file storage, video rendering, background job delivery, sign-in and email delivery, error monitoring and, if you allow it, product analytics. They may use the information only to provide their services to us.
• AI assistants you connect: when you use Shotcut from ChatGPT, Claude or a similar assistant, we return results to that assistant. Its provider handles your conversation under its own privacy policy.
• People you choose to share with: Shotcut projects are private by default. If you create a share link, anyone with the link can view that preview or video until it expires or you revoke it.
• Legal and safety reasons: when required by law, or to protect the rights, safety and security of users, Pro Stack Labs or others.
• Business transfers: as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, subject to this policy.

Analytics and cookies

We use essential cookies and browser storage to keep you signed in, remember your preferences and keep the service secure. They can’t be turned off without breaking Shotcut.

Product analytics are off until you choose Allow. If your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as declining. You can change your choice at any time from Privacy choices in the site footer or from your account page. We don’t use session recording or advertising cookies.

How long we keep information

• Projects you haven’t claimed with an account are deleted 30 days after creation.
• Projects and videos in your account are kept until you delete them or your account data.
• Brief usage records for fair-use limits are kept for up to one day.
• Logs and error reports are kept for a limited period for security and troubleshooting, then deleted.
• Support messages are kept as long as needed to resolve your request and meet legal obligations.

When you delete data, we remove it from our active systems promptly. Copies in backups are overwritten on the providers’ normal backup cycle. We may keep information longer where the law requires it.

Deleting your data

Signed in, go to your account page and choose Permanently delete my data to remove all your projects, videos and assistant connections. To close your sign-in account as well, email support. Disconnecting Shotcut in your AI assistant does not delete your Shotcut projects.

International transfers

Pro Stack Labs and our service providers process information in the United States and other countries whose data protection laws may differ from yours. Where the law requires, we use appropriate safeguards for these transfers, such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.

Security

We protect information with encryption in transit and at rest, access controls and the principle of least privilege. Your projects are private by default, and download and preview links are short-lived. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your information and will notify you and the authorities of a breach where the law requires.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or export your personal information, to object to or restrict certain processing, to withdraw consent, and to not be discriminated against for using these rights.

• European Economic Area, United Kingdom and Switzerland: you can also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
• California and other U.S. states: you can request to know, delete and correct personal information, and appeal our decision by replying to it. We do not sell or share personal information, so no opt-out is needed. You may use an authorized agent.
• India: you can access, correct, complete, update and erase your personal data, nominate another person to act for you, and raise a grievance with us. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Data Protection Board of India.

To make a request, email support.shotcut@prostacklabs.com. We will verify your identity and respond within the time required by law.

Children

Shotcut is not directed to children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their personal information. Where the law sets a higher age, such as under 18 in India, a child may use Shotcut only with verifiable consent from a parent or guardian. If you believe a child has given us personal information without the required consent, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as Shotcut changes. We will post the new version here with a new effective date and, for significant changes, tell you in the product or by email.
